2016We are savoring the taste of victory! Chef Mark Stark had the opportunity last week to mentor a team of energetic and passionate 5th graders from McKinley Elementary School to collectively come up with a lunchtime dish using fresh, local, organic and seasonal ingredients that costs $2.25 per person.
It was part of The Conscious Kitchen Junior Cooking Challenge put on by Clover Sonoma in the kitchens of The Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley. Chef Mark introduced himself to his junior sous chefs by saying “My name is Mark Stark, and I don’t like to lose!”
The team, donned in their custom-made mini chef coats, took the message to heart as they created a menu that included Cali Korean BBQ Mary’s Chicken Rice Bowl with a side of Roasted Greens & Things, Honeyed Citrus Fruit with Clover Yogurt and Pistachio Crunch, served with a Coconut Agua Fresca.
Team Stark & Company were awarded first prize in the competition, followed by teams led by Liza Hinman of Spinster Sisters in Santa Rosa, and Cole Dickinson of MacArthur Place in Sonoma. Judges said they were especially impressed with Team Stark’s menu presentation and use of seasonal ingredients.
In the end, these young students learned from some of Sonoma County’s best chefs about the value of healthy, organic food and hopefully they’ll be inspired to eat better and cook more!
